Cinque Terre

Portovenere

Cinque Terre – Portovenere

Italy, visited september 2011.

In the foothills of the Apuan Alps, and very close to the mediterranean, the five villages of Cinque Terre offer great hiking and swimming opportunities. The villages can be hiked using the low trail (route nr 2) or the high trail (route nr 1) , and many combinations are possible. Expect steep ascents and descents on either route. A very nice trail goes from Portovenere to Riomaggiore too.

The backdrop of the entire city of Ushuaia is truly dramatic.  One of the peaks is Cerro Martial, and it has a glacier which is easily reached by going up the mountain along the sides of the cable cars used for skiing in winter.

Reachable from the centre of town by a couple of minutes taxi drive …

Fantastic views over Ushuaia and the Beagle Channel.
